College essays predict student success

The words you use in your college essay could predict your future success. A recent study suggests that you might want to rethink your word choices before submitting your application.

The Daily Pennsylvanian, the newspaper of the University of Pennsylvania (Penn), published this article that summarized the findings of a major study. Researchers analyzed over 50,000 essays from more than 25,000 students. Their findings are startling: the use of certain 'function words' can indeed predict future academic success. Certain words suggest abstract thinking ability, which is very important for information synthesis in college. This research should be taken with caution, though, as admissions directors nationwide urge students not to become over-reliant on a thesaurus.

What do you think of the findings of this study? We would love to hear your comment below.
